In Hesse, the position of honour is at the far left when facing the flag. That is where the European flag is displayed, with the federal flag to the right, followed by the Land flag or Land institutions flag.

Flags are hoisted at 7:00 and lowered at nightfall. Flags may be displayed 24 hours a day if the display is to extend over several days.
